The amount of time children spend outdoors in playgrounds has rapidly decreased.

Playgrounds play an essential role in the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of children right from the stage of early childhood. It is a natural tool for children to develop resiliency as they learn to cooperate, overcome challenges, and negotiate with others. Play also allows children to be creative. It even provides a platform to build a healthy parent-child relationship. The amount of time children spend outdoors in playgrounds has rapidly decreased in the last ten years and it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure that children of all ages are getting a good amount of exercise.
 
With the introduction of computers and game consoles, children are becoming used to staying indoors and only interacting through screens and monitors. However, it is essential that children get outdoors both for their health and well-being. The obesity rate for children is consistently increasing, so it is important to encourage children to do regular exercise, ideally on a daily basis. Also the long time spent by children indoors while playing computer games or watching television may be to blame for a resurgence of rickets.
 
Scientists say that rickets is becoming "disturbingly common" among children. The disease is caused by chronic vitamin D deficiencies, which can be triggered by long periods out of natural sunlight and a poor diet. Lack of exposure to outdoors is leading to a rapid increase in such problems in children between ages 5-15.
